Tear trough treatment
Why choose tear trough treatment?
When the eyes look tired or show signs of premature ageing, that reflects on the whole of the face. Many clients share concerns that the appearance of their eyes is making them look old.
The aim of a tear trough treatment is soften the tired eyes and sunken look that makes people look exhausted. It is not a perfect correction but an improvement and if there is excess skin in the area or natural puffiness in the lower eyelid area the doctor will need to assess you carefully to ensure it’s a going to be a beneficial treatment.
Tear trough treatment is a non-invasive solution. Results are near instant and last for months at a time.
How Does Tear Trough Treatment Work?
The doctor uses advanced, long-lasting dermal fillers to replenish lost volume in the eye area.
Treatment tends to be delivered as a series of tiny injections into the under eye area to get a smooth and natural result. Our team are highly trained and completely aware of the anatomical issues of the area.
What Can Tear Trough Treatment Help With?
Particular issues include:
- Dark circles
- Under eye hollows
- Eye bags
- Lines and creases
Should I consider an eye lift?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure, whereas tear trough treatment is entirely non-surgical.
If you are interested in having an eye lift, this is available as an alternative. However, that tends to address the upper eye area. If your concern is more about loose or discoloured skin beneath the eyes, then tear trough treatment may be a better option.
Ultimately the 2 procedures can be combined for optimum results. Tear trough fillers are only temporary in nature so will need topping up as and when they become depleted, but the blepharoplasty surgery involves permanent removal of excess skin.

Tear Troughs FAQ: Questions & Answers
Does tear trough treatment hurt?
No. It feels uncomfortable for a few seconds whilst we position the dermal filler into the correct position, but this only lasts a few seconds.
Is there a risk of eye damage with this procedure?
No, as the training and expert knowledge of the anatomy in this area by the doctors means the risks are minimised. We would not recommend seeing anybody other than trained doctors.
Who will carry out my treatment?
All consultations and treatments are carried out by qualified doctors or surgeons who are highly trained and experienced in carrying out anti-ageing injection treatments.
You are in very safe hands with our experts.
What product is used for this procedure?
At Cosmedics Skin Clinics, our doctors only use advanced and long-lasting Juvederm® hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers.
How does it feel afterwards?
There is some initial swelling in the area that can last for 2-3 days afterwards. Its important to follow the aftercare advice given. Bruising if any tends to be minimal due to the use of ‘soft needles’ that don’t cause much bleeding.
Will the treatment need to be repeated?
We only use temporary dermal fillers at Cosmedics Skin Clinics, so the results won’t last forever. When the fillers start to wear off, we can carry out another tear troughs treatment for you.
Will tear trough treatment remove dark circles?
Not in most people unless it is related to a loss of volume in the area. Most dark circles (particularly in darker skin types) are not treatable as this tends to be a genetic predisposition. Covering up with makeup is the best option.
Why are my dark circles worse than everyone else’s?
Unfortunately, some people are more prone to dark circles than others. Part of this is genetic and you may just have inherited a propensity to eyebags or hollows. However, there are other factors too which can affect this area:
- Insufficient sleep is typically associated with eyebags and dark circles
- Weight loss can accentuate the issue as there is less tissue depth in the area
- Lifestyle factors such as dehydration (not drinking enough) and smoking can also have a bearing on the appearance of the eye area
Does this treatment help reduce puffiness?
Tear trough treatment is best used for subtle under-eye bags or hollows as it replenishes lost volume. If you have ‘puffiness’ then that would indicate that there is excessive volume. We may suggest an alternative treatment such as ClearLift laser, which is available at selected London clinics.
When will I see the results of tear trough treatment?
You can see an initial result from the tear trough fillers immediately and the area will instantly look less hollow. If you happen to experience any swelling/bruising, then you’ll see the finished result once this has subsided.
I only want a small trial of the filler – is that possible?
Yes, we often aim to underfill the eye area in any case as it is so delicate and then review in about 2-4 weeks, at which point we may possibly add some more. It’s a gradual and subtle addition to ensure natural results.
Are tear trough fillers reversible?
When can I return to work?
In most cases we would say the following day, but do expect some initial puffiness.
For a big social event we would recommend at least a week before, to ensure that everything has settled down in good time.
