Expert Advice Dr Ross Perry

Stylist asked Dr Ross Perry to provide his medical opinion on the new hack of using tape to achieve ‘cat eye’ makeup.

The article explains:

“TikTok users have gone viral for using different forms of tape to create crisp cat eyeliner.”

This is the latest trend to surge on TikTok, with users sharing their experiences and advice about how to use tape to get a neat cat eye look with eyeshadow. Some users advocate sellotape while others go for a more medical microporous or fabric type plaster tape.

However, the skin around the eyes is very delicate, so is it safe?

Stylist writer Morgan Fargo asked Dr Ross Perry for his advice.

Expert Advice on Using Tape To Help Apply Eye Makeup

Dr Ross Perry says:

“You should absolutely not be using Sellotape as this could cause all manner of problems such as tearing and sensitivity.

“Microporous tape would be slightly easier on the skin, but again the adhesive is likely to pull. Frequent use of this will have long-term effects and much the same as fabric first aid tape.

“There is specially designed cosmetic tape not available on the market for this very use; however, I’d still advise not to be doing this regularly.

“The skin around the eye area is extremely thin and delicate and it can easily be damaged by using the wrong products, pulling the skin in certain ways and placing adhesives over the eye area.

“Some of the problems which may occur can include sensitivity, irritation, redness, swelling and possible tearing. Long-term use could even result in sagging skin around the eye area.

“As the skin around the eyes, including the skin underneath your eyes, is thinner than the skin on the rest of your face it’s not a good idea to be using tape on a daily basis. Not only will you be taking out hairs that are meant to be there, but you will also have red sore patches and possible tearing to the skin, which could become infected. Putting make-up over the area which has had tape on it may also cause irritation and sensitivity.”

Eye Treatments

For those looking to revitalise the eye area, Cosmedics Skin Clinics offers a range of potential solutions to freshen, tighten and brighten the delicate eye skin. The procedures are safe and effective, carried out by highly trained doctors or surgeons in medical clinics.

Upper Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)

This is a day case surgery procedure. A surgeon explains:

“It’s quite a quick procedure can be done in local anaesthetic, which means there’s no general anaesthetic involved.

“The procedure itself takes under an hour. Down time is anywhere between three days and one week. You can have a little bit of swelling, a little bit of bruising and the stitches; once the stitches come out which happens on day seven you can start wearing your makeup again and get back to enjoying your eyes that you had 20 years ago.”
