Expert Summer Health Hacks in iNews
iNews asked leading doctors and health experts to share their tips and advice for staying well this summer.
They asked Dr Ross Perry, GP and medical director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics to provide his advice on SPF. As a UK mole removal expert and skin cancer reconstruction doctor in the NHS, Ross has detailed knowledge of the importance of sunscreen and how to get the best protection. He says:
“Apply SPF the right way
“Always put SPF on at least 20 minutes before heading outdoors: it needs time to sink into the skin, otherwise you run the risk of burning, which can lead to skin cancer down the line.
“Never forget to put SPF on your eyelids or soles of the feet, especially if you’re playing sport or swimming. These areas are often forgotten about and are prone to burning.”
Other health experts provided their tips too
- Replace electrolytes lost through sweating
- Get outdoors to maximise vitamin D and boost your mood
- Keep cool by focusing on pulse points or having a cool shower
- Stay ahead of hayfever by avoiding peak forecasts, using masks and applying drops cold
- Drink more if it’s hot – the colour of your urine is an indicator
- High-water food such as watermelon/cucumber also helps hydrate the body
- Hot drinks can help to cool you down
- Take a cool shower before bed and manage the temperature in the room by having windows open only at night.
- Use ear plugs when swimming or flying
- Try seaweed snacks for a vitamin and mineral boost
- Tips for post-holiday
