Dr Ross Perry GP & Founder/Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics

Dr Ross Perry was recently invited to give expert medical advice for Woman’s Own on their health feature entitled:

“What your wee says about your wellbeing.”

As an experienced NHS GP, Ross is often asked to provide expert advice on health matters for the media and can be relied upon for sensible and reliable advice.

He opened the feature by explaining:

“Urine is a great marker for health. It looks predominantly at hydration, but can also reveal whether there are any medical conditions, such as diabetes, an infection, kidney disease or even cancer.”

Normal, healthy and well-hydrated urine should be pale yellow to gold.

One of the most common issues is for people to find their pee is dark yellow or orange. This is a sign of dehydration and a reminder to drink more. Failing to hydrate properly can lead to constipation, UTI (urinary tract infection) and other general health issues such as headaches and reduced energy levels.

Dr Ross Perry advised:

“Drink more water and you should notice a change the next time you pee.”

Adults should aim to drink 1.2 litres a day, which equates to between 6 and 8 glasses of water.

If urine is dark brown or black, then that could be a sign of skin cancer, but that is very rare. Dr Ross Perry is a leading expert on skin cancer in the UK. He said:

“You’re normally more likely to spot a melanoma from checking your skin.”

Other issues covered in the article included:

  • Bright yellow urine – most often a potential consequence of taking multivitamins containing B supplement, but could indicate liver problems so see your GP if concerned
  • Pink or red urine – can be an effect of eating beetroot or new medication. However, blood in your urine is not normal, so see a GP if you are worried
  • Milky white urine – could be a UTI (urinary tract infection), or cystitis or a kidney infection. May also be painful. See a GP for diagnosis and treatment
  • Green urine – usually a consequence of eating something green e.g. asparagus
