Good To Know with Dr Ross Perry

Cosmedics founder and GP Dr Ross Perry was invited to share his expert medical advice on how to keep cool in the hot weather during pregnancy.

Online lifestyle magazine Good to Know sought his input for their feature:

“Top tips on how to keep cool in hot weather during pregnancy”

As the weather is warming up, the heat can make life very uncomfortable for those who are expecting. The body temperature is naturally elevated so when the weather is hot as well, it can be difficult to keep cool and comfortable.

Dr Ross Perry told Good to Know that it is important not to dismiss fever:

“If your body temperature is elevated for over 10 minutes (i.e. over 38.9°C), the heat can cause problems. Especially in the first trimester as excessive heat can lead to neural tube defects and increase the risk of miscarriage.”

Dr Ross Perry’s Advice

He shared a series of tips to help mums-to-be survive warmer weather:

Stay Hydrated

Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and remember to take supplies if you’re going out:

“If you’re travelling, make sure you always have a bottle of water with you. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to reach for a drink but keep fluid intake up and steer clear of caffeine, which can make you feel more dehydrated.”

Avoid the sun

The skin is more sensitive, so avoid extended time in the sun and ensure you are protected with high SPF. Dr Perry added:

“Some women develop a condition called chloasma, which causes brown patches on the face. These can appear darker after sun exposure,’ Dr Ross said, before advising pregnant women ‘to use an SPF of at least 30, wear loose comfortable clothing, a wide brimmed hat and stay in the shade.”

Cold compress

“A cold flannel against your forehead or over your baby bump is an effective way to cool down fast.”

More Tips on Keeping Cool in Pregnancy

Other tips included in the article included:

  • Clothing – wearing lighter fabrics and looser designs is more comfortable than tighter, thicker clothes
  • Chill moisturiser – popping creams in the fridge can be soothing
  • Bedding – swap your duvet for a sheet
  • Fan – have a fan in the bedroom to keep you cool at night
  • Spray bottle – a little spritz to the face cools you down as it evaporates
  • Wrists – running your wrists under the cold tap will cool your pulse points
  • Exercise – avoid strenuous exercise for now – gentler yoga is less sweaty
  • Cold food – lollies and salads are cooler. Avoid spice and curry for now
  • Avoid exertion – get your shopping delivered and take your time with household tasks
  • Lukewarm bathing – turn the temperature down a bit on your baths and showers, although not too much – cold baths and showers are counterproductive
  • Foot bath – popping your feet in cold water can be very cooling. A bowl or paddling pool is ideal
