Sheerluxe: 6 Surprising Uses of BOTOX®
Dr Ross Perry was invited to provide expert information and insight into the range of surprising alternative potential uses for BOTOX®.
BOTOX® or botulinum toxin is best known for its use in anti-ageing treatment, relaxing the appearance of wrinkles for younger-looking skin. But as Sheerluxe explained, there are a range of other medical uses too.
The feature summarised:
“Here’s 6 common ailments and disorders that surprisingly Botox can treat…”
1. Migraines
BOTOX® is licensed for the treatment chronic migraines and can be considered where the patient has suffered with severe and persistent migraines, which generally includes headaches and nausea. Dr Perry explained:
“A series of small injections are made into specific locations on the head and scalp. Some patients have seen excellent results where other treatments have failed.”
2. Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
BOTOX® is licensed for treatment of hyperhidrosis – excessive sweating. Dr Perry says:
“For underarm sweating, patients have generally tried a whole range of strong and even prescription-strength antiperspirants, but still find they have abnormal levels of sweat, which can cause embarrassment and social discomfort. In these cases, BOTOX® injections are very successful and is generally far preferable to surgery.”
Use of BOTOX® injections for excessive sweating is generally far preferable to surgery, which can be costly and not always with a great result.
3. Acne
BOTOX® is a potential option for dealing with persistent acne, as it can work to reduce overproduction of sebum. However, Dr Perry warns that other options may be more appropriate:
“Although some patients having BOTOX® for cosmetic reasons do sometimes remark on the reduced pores, sweating and oiliness in the area, it certainly would not be the first choice of treatment – skin clinics now offer excellent laser and/or LED light therapies that would likely work better.”
4. Overactive Bladder
Use of BOTOX® for overactive bladder is a very specialised treatment which would normally be carried out by a urologist. A series of injections are placed into the bladder wall, where they work to relax the muscle and prevent it over squeezing. The procedure is uncomfortable at the time, but can then provide months of relief from stress or urge incontinence.
5. Decreases Excessive Drooling
Here, BOTOX® is injected into the salivary glands. It is quite a specialised treatment and only used in severe cases, as Dr Perry explains:
“…such as where drooling is the result of a neurological disorder and causes irritation for the patient.”
6. Crossed Eyes
The very first medical use of BOTOX was to treat ocular dystonias or blepharospasm and BOTOX still has a range of uses in this area today. By relaxing overactive muscles in the area, a calmer and more normal appearance and function can be restored. This is only used in severe cases, but as Dr Perry told Sheerluxe:
“…there are no real alternatives”

BOTOX® Wrinkle Treatment
Of course, the most common use of BOTOX® injections is for treating the signs of ageing.
Botulinum toxin is very powerful, so only a tiny amount is used. It is carefully and positioned where it will calm the movement of fine dynamic facial muscles, thereby reducing the appearance of lines for a younger look.
Dr Perry’s own injection techniques have been developed in order to create a natural-looking result which is never ‘fake’, ‘frozen’ or ‘overdone’.
