Expert GP Advice

Yours magazine looked into the latest coronavirus situation with expert input and advice from Dr Ross Perry, who is a practising GP in London as well as founder and Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics.

As the article states, it’s now nearly 3 years since Covid-19 was first identified. The introduction reads:

“It’s clear that Covid is still very much with us, and the winter months may make us more vulnerable to infection. Ahead of winter, we’ve got answers on the most pressing questions.”

Yours magazine asked Dr Ross Perry to explain what to expect and how we can help ourselves.

Can we expect another winter spike?

Ross said:

“It’s largely inevitable that with the cooler weather and children back at school, cases of Covid-19 will be on the rise throughout the autumn and as we head into winter.

“There are predictions of a new variant, but Covid is extremely unpredictable as to what that looks like, and although it’s still to be taken seriously, the autumn booster is readily available and will be offered first to the elderly and vulnerable.”

How can we avoid Covid/flu?

Ross says:

“It is still important to remain cautious, and this includes the basic measures of washing hands frequently, using hand sanitiser and trying to avoid those with coughs and colds.

“People wearing masks, particularly on public transport or at large venues, may be slightly better protected, and shouldn’t feel embarrassed to do so.

“As we head into winter, the best way to avoid catching or spreading flu is by having the vaccination before the flu season gets underway.

“Autumn boosters will top up the immunity of those most vulnerable, so we can live with Covid-19 without restrictions.”

How can we boost the immune system?

Ross advises:

“The general advice is to try and eat a healthy balanced diet, exercise at least three times a week – a daily walk will suffice – and try to take a daily supplement of vitamin D, normally about 2000 iUnitis. Plus get lots of sleep and try to avoid getting run down.”

I’ve caught Covid – can I speed up my recovery?

“For the majority of people infected, if they are fully vaccinated, illness is typically mild and for some they may have no symptoms at all.

“It’s important to keep hydrated and avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks, which can make you feel more dehydrated. You can take paracetamol to cope with any fever and pain. It’s important to rest and listen to your body as it will be using up a lot of energy when trying to fight infection, so try to take it easy.

“Eat a good diet of protein, leafy greens and plenty of fruit to get those all important vitamins, and keep exercise to a minimum until you feel fully recovered.”
